20 Worst Movies Of 2017 (So Far)
15. Spark: A Space Tail
For all of the Disneys, Pixars and Illumination animations out there delighting young fans throughout the holiday seasons and pulling in astronomical box office hauls, there's a whole under-current of little animations that aspired to the same level, despite their obvious limitations.
Spark very firmly belongs on that pile: it's propped up by some okay character designs, but the whole thing feels like a bargain basement alternative. The plot relies on a MacGuffin that is quite literally shat out by a space monster, which says all you need to know about the aspirations of this Space Chimps knock-off.
There are undoubtedly some gags in there to delight the youngest audience members, but there's nothing like the necessary substance behind them - the heart, the empathy, the good writing - to really drag this into watchable territory. If you really HAVE to watch a space monkey film, just watch Space Chimps. It's not good, but it's better than this.
