20 Worst Movies Of 2017 (So Far)
14. Atomica
Several years ago, the idea of Lost star Dominic Monaghan and Tom Sizemore starring together in a sci-fi might have been something to get excited about. Sadly, now that sci-fi is spelled SyFy and both of the stars have fallen hugely from grace, straight through the bargain bin and into made for TV purgatory.
Atomica might be the second film in SyFy's attempt to make actual cinematic releases (with VOD schedules to back them up), it still whiffs badly of being made for TV by a Z-movie farm. There are some arresting ideas in there, and Monaghan isn't entirely unwatchable, and he's hampered by a river of cliches in the script that never quite offers satisfaction because it feels so unpolished.
Curiously, despite getting Monaghan, the project feels like it fails most because of a clipped sense of ambition, which might have otherwise transformed the central premise (of a man disturbed by mysterious power plant employees while he works a lonely job) into something worth bothering with.
