1. Cats
Even if you’re a cat person, you’re probably going to want to avoid this one. Actually, especially if you’re a cat person, lest the movie sour you on kittens forever. It’s not just that it’s bad either, but that it seems to revel in its badness, laughing at you for daring to hope it would not be terrible when in fact, it was always going to be.
The original musical famously had no plot to speak of, and the movie doesn’t seem to view narrative as necessary either. It’s essentially a lot of cats showing up, singing about what sort of cat they are, then disappearing.
Even without the complication of the cats, having stellar actors like Ian McKellen, Judi Dench & Idris Elba in a movie with Taylor Swift, James Corden and Rebel Wilson was always going to be difficult to juggle. In the end, all the balls are dropped while the cats scurry everywhere after them in a frantic mess of fur.
Some of the sequences, like Rebel Wilson stripping off her own flesh to reveal a silk dress, are just nightmarish too.
The less said about the strangely oversexualised cat silhouettes of Bombalurina and her ilk the better, so let’s just leave it there.
