15. The Playmobil Movie
Remember when we saw The Lego Movie and everyone was like ‘wow, that really shouldn’t have worked?’; The Playmobil Movie is what happens when it doesn’t work.
Playmobil has perhaps a less recognisable name than Lego and a less iconic aesthetic, but that’s far from its only issue. Lego has a long history, through games and tv shows of Star Wars, Batman et al of spinning a line of franchise toys into something fresh and bursting with childish wit and joyful personality.
Playmobil just has some plastic figures. The plan seemed to be to just toss these plastic figures in front of the camera and hope that worked; it didn’t.
This movie just steals everything that works from The Lego Movie, apart from the warmth, humour or storytelling magic. Even the live action segments are stolen, and any message about the joys of imagination are completely derailed by the fact the movie itself clearly lacks imagination.
