14. Zeroville
To hear the cast of Zeroville, you’d at first think it was a goofy dude bro comedy, before the names open up and it seems more like a Coen Brothers movie with a deliberately strange cast.
James and Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, Megan Fox... but then they’re joined by Gus Van Sant, Chris Messina, Jacki Weaver and Joey King.
The longer you watch though, the more you realise it is in fact just a dude bro comedy, albeit one which desperately wants to be taken seriously. It fancies itself as a bit of a Coen Brothers homage, but ghetto reviews didn’t get much higher than its titular zero.
The casting here certainly could have worked, but it’s Franco in one of his more dramatic roles. Unfortunately, he’s taken his friends with him but forgets his a-game.
Zeroville centres around the glamour of Hollywood in 1969, but the whole thing seems to lack authenticity. There’s very little heart to any of it, and the dialogue has almost zero depth. You’d be tempted to think it was a comment on the shallowness of the industry if it wasn’t so incessantly dull throughout.
