13. Men In Black: International

Sony Pictures

Men In Black: International deserves at least some praise for trying something different. The franchise had been going downhill since the first one. Unfortunately, by moving away from Will Smith & Tommy Lee Jones’ established characters, they only accelerated the decline with this one.

To point the blame at that alone though would unfairly cast responsibility onto their replacements: Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth. Instead, the pair are the best thing in this, and their dynamic chemistry suggests Thompson ought to have more screen time in Thor: Love & Thunder.

With Emma Thompson and Liam Neeson in support, the cast is actually the least of their worries. The problems came more from the script, which simply didn’t know what it was supposed to be doing. Men In Black could have worked as a fully paid up cheese fest, or as a more ironic wink at its ‘90s sci fi action roots. The movie tries to do a little of both though, and ends up doing neither.

Committing more to the wackiness and throwing in more humour feels like the way to go, but the film held back. It’s like it didn’t want to be accused of being silly in reviews. Now it’s just being accused of being bad.
