12. Spiral: From The Book Of Saw

Chaos Walking Daisy Ridley Tom Holland
Lionsgate

On paper, it really seemed like Spiral might be the shot in the arm the Saw franchise desperately needed - a soft-reboot of sorts which brought a new creative voice to the table by way of Chris Rock.

As it turns out, Spiral squanders its timely themes re: police brutality on a strangely uninteresting thriller procedural, peppered with occasional - if mostly forgettable - bursts of blood-letting.

Ultimately Spiral feels less like a Saw movie than it does an imitation of Se7en with the Saw branding slapped on it.

Though admirably trying to move the series in an entirely new direction, the big twists land with a groan-inducing clunk, particularly a villain reveal fans of the series will see coming miles away.

Given the film's failure both critically and commercially, though, we'll probably end up with yet another attempt to restart the franchise in a few years.
