13. The Bubble

Pinocchio Disney
Netflix

The Bubble revolves around a group of actors who are trying to complete their film, which is being compromised by the COVID pandemic. Now, releasing a comedy about a event that figuratively shut the whole world down for two years is a really, really risky move.

But with Judd Apatow at the helm and a killer cast, including David Duchovny Karen Gillan, Keegan-Michael Key, Maria Bakalova, Pedro Pascal, and many other astounding comedians, it looked like The Bubble could work.

However, because this Netflix original is heavily reliant on improvisation rather than tightly-knitted scriptwriting, the majority of the gags fall flat. Although there are some genuinely hilarious moments (especially the Doctor Strange bit) all these jokes were spoilt in the trailer.

There is so little funny material here, there's no justification why The Bubble runs for a punishing 126 minutes. If it chopped off half an hour, Apatow's stinker still wouldn't be great, but it would've been a lot more tolerable.
