12. Pinocchio (Disney Version)
If you’re tired of Disney creating live-action remakes of their classic films, avoid Pinocchio at all costs. Yes, there may be some genuinely good ideas sprinkled throughout, but it's not enough to justify this money-grabbing rehash.
Despite the filmmakers feeble attempts to modernise the story, the 82-year-old adaptation feels fresher and more relatable. Pinocchio's growing nose barely affects the story and the film concludes with him not turning into a real boy. (Those are the two most iconic aspects of the original and this version didn't factor in either of them!)
Another key element that's lacking is tension. Stromboli, The Coachmen, The Shadow Creatures, and Monstro were genuinely frightening in the original. For many children, watching the boys transform into donkeys in 1940's Pinocchio scarred them for life.
But in this version, the donkey scene has no weight and the villains are depicted as silly, incompetent, or generic. Since you get no sense of menace, you don’t really care when Pinocchio or his friends are in danger. If you want to see a Pinocchio story capture the soul of the source material, watch Guillermo del Toro’s animated rendition instead.
