2012 Films: Best And Worst Of The Year Awards

Best Costume Design

WINNER: Lincoln (Joanna Johnston) Costume design is one of those categories that (perhaps unfairly) tends to get more attention in period fare than anywhere else, because it requires a certain level of craft that contemporary pieces simply do not, to convincingly recreate the attire of decades, and in some cases, even centuries past. Joanna Johnston's superb threadwork on Spielberg's Lincoln helps make the period seem impeccably authentic, in particular helping add a little pep to Daniel Day-Lewis' already stupendously good performance; decked out in the hat and suit, he looks 100% the part. RUNNERS UP: Argo Django Unchained The Master Les Misérables

Best Makeup & Hairstyling

WINNER: Cloud Atlas (Daniel Parker) There has been much controversy over Cloud Atlas' so-called "yellowface" (an unsavoury term that itself seems pretty racist), whereby white actors were made-up to look Asian. While these effects were perhaps the ropier ones the film had to offer, the make-up effects on the whole were absolutely stunning, rendering actors nigh-on unrecognisable. Arguably the best on show is Tom Hanks' hilarious get-up as a mixed-race, Scouse gangster; Hanks is clearly having a blast with it, and it's just unbelievable that make-up effects have come this far. RUNNERS UP: Looper Amour The Impossible Lincoln The Sound categories are on the next page.
