2012 Films: Best And Worst Of The Year Awards

Best Cinematography

WINNER: Skyfall (Roger Deakins) Roger Deakins, somehow, has never won an Academy Award, despite working with the majority of cinema's most famed and popular directors, and having been nominated for a stunning 9 Oscars already. He's sure to scoop up a 10th nod for his work on Sam Mendes' superb Bond flick Skyfall, and this might just be the time that he finally wins the thing outright. Whether it's the sunny rooftops of Istanbul, the futuristic neon of Shanghai, or the washed-out hue of the film's Highlands climax, Deakins helps craft what is easily the most visually elaborate Bond film to date. An unforgettable achievement, indeed. RUNNERS UP: The Master The Dark Knight Rises Prometheus Django Unchained

Best Film Editing

WINNER: Skyfall (Stuart Baird) Combined with its visual punchiness, Skyfall also benefits from being snappily edited, ensuring that its lengthy 140-minute runtime isn't just a case of an editor not knowing when to let go. Stuart Baird edits the countless set-pieces for maximum visceral effect, but also makes the dialogue-driven scenes absolutely riveting; the decision not to cut away from Javier Bardem's first appearance is particularly excellent, forsaking extended coverage in favour of one single, static take. Baird's contributions helped to make this the most thunderous and intense James Bond film yet. RUNNERS UP: Argo The Dark Knight Rises Looper Zero Dark Thirty It's Best Costume Design and Makeup next.
