2018 Movies That Broke Into IMDB's Top 250

4. Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody Rami Malek
Fox

Rating: 8.3

For all of the controversy around its Golden Globes recognition, Bohemian Rhapsody is still an entertaining experience. It's in no way a true reflection of the life of Freddie Mercury, but it still stands as a monument to him, ostensibly made for fans who wouldn't necessarily have wanted to see his legacy torn down by the reality of some of the darker moments of his life.

Queen, inevitably, come out of the film pretty well (they were creatively involved after all) and Freddie is slightly vilified in a way that seems almost like affectionate catharsis and it's certainly not an objective exercise in the truth. But that doesn't compromise what makes it entertaining and there's a lot to enjoy in here - not least the stunning recreation of the Live Aid performance at the end.

Rami Malek deserves every accolade for his performance as Mercury, but the supporting cast is also just as impressive when they're given the material to work with. It's just a shame some of it didn't go a little further.
