With everything the Russos had to do to make Avengers: Infinity War a success - or even for it to match the insane levels of hype that greeted it throughout its production process - it's stunning that it even managed to be a coherent film, let alone one that pulled in more than $2bn at the box office and delighted fans and critics.

Following the same trend of escalation the Russos brought to Captain America: Civil War after The Winter Soldier, Infinity War is dialled up to eleven, introducing the MCU's most compelling, fully-realised villain and impressively personal stakes for the key players.

Sure, some characters were forced to take a slight backseat - or were just left out entirely for the greater good - but the balance they manage to cut is very impressive. Plus, comic book movies have never been this devastating or this bold with killing people off and the impact on the fanbase speaks for how well it all worked.
