20 Incredible Recent Movies That FLOPPED
7. Bugonia
Yorgos Lanthimos' box office performance has always been all over the place, though considering he managed to make a hit out of something as aggressively strange as Poor Things, it was easy to trust he'd do the same for the decidedly more accessible Bugonia.
Yet despite starring the white-hot Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons and scoring strong reviews from critics, this remake of 2003's South Korean film Save the Green Planet! topped out at just $43.8 million, falling far short of its $55 million budget.
The budget certainly raises a few eyebrows considering how much of the film takes place in just a couple of simple sets, but even so, Focus Features was almost certainly expecting this to perform similarly to Poor Things, which raked in $117.6 million - almost triple Bugonia's haul.
Yet considering the film's rave reviews and four Oscar nominations - including Best Picture and Best Actress for Emma Stone - Focus will likely chalk it up as a prestige write-off and the cost of being in business with a filmmaker as brilliant as Lanthimos.
