Boots Riley's bonkers new crime comedy I Love Boosters has enjoyed rave reviews ever since it premiered at SXSW back in March, and though the commercial success of his 2018 debut Sorry to Bother You suggested he'd cultivated quite a fanbase for himself, they just didn't show up in enough numbers for his second feature.

Though this visually stunning anti-capitalist satire marks a major step up for Riley as a filmmaker and was produced for a modest-ish $20 million, it failed to even pass the $10 million mark by the end of its run.

Riley, who loudly implored his fans to go see the film opening weekend before cinema chains began pulling it, deemed its box office performance a disappointment, while citing many now-classic films which also failed to turn a profit during their initial theatrical run.

Riley is a rare breed of iconoclastic filmmaker, so hopefully this film's commercial stumble won't stop him getting his next project made, whatever that is.
