Roofman is one of the most underappreciated films of last year - a terrifically crafted dramatisation of the life of Jeffrey Manchester aka The Roofman, who robbed various McDonald's locations and then, while on the run, hid out in a Toys "R" Us store.
Channing Tatum gives a remarkable performance as Manchester in a film that delicately switches gears between comedy and a darker, more grounded critique of class and capitalism.
Yet despite strong reviews and a stacked cast also including Kirsten Dunst, Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, and Peter Dinklage, Roofman ended its theatrical run at just $34.8 million - a paltry return on its $19 million budget.
A big part of the problem was the film's marketing, which failed to sufficiently convey its mixture of tones, instead rather cynically presenting it as a broad comedy which, honestly, nobody could be blamed for waiting to watch at home.
Furthermore, it released in a crowded mid-October corridor where it simply didn't stand a chance of catching mainstream attention.
