11. It's A Direct Sequel To Close Encounters - Disclosure Day

The Rumour:

The fact that Steven Spielberg's new sci-fi film Disclosure Day was shot under a veil of secrecy only fuelled rumours that it was in fact going to be a surprise sequel to his 1977 genre classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Given the similar subject matter, of humanity dealing with extraterrestrial contact, and the marketing also touting similar imagery, it wasn't the most ridiculous idea in the world, especially in our era of increasingly IP-reliant filmmaking.

But some even went far enough to bet that Richard Dreyfuss would make an appearance as Close Encounters' protagonist, Roy Neary.

The Truth:

But no, Disclosure Day is nothing more than a spiritual successor to Close Encounters - it's in no way a direct follow-up and Richard Dreyfuss has nothing to do with it.

Though many might've wished that the rumours were true considering the polarising response to Spielberg's latest, it wasn't to be.
