21 Best Films Of The 21st Century By Genre
8. Comedy - Bridesmaids
American Director Paul Feig opened up the Comedy genre in a whole new way when he paired up Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy with several other female comedians for a genuinely hilarious set of hijinks. No, it wasn't the mess that was the Ghostbusters reboot, but the brilliantly scripted and directed Bridesmaids.
With Judd Apatow producing, the film utilises a number of his storytelling traits while allowing Wiig and McCarthy to let loose with their comic skills. The key here is that the other central actors largely play it straight, with Maya Rudolph and Rose Byrne happy to play more subdued roles for the sake of the film- a trait sorely lacking in Ghostbusters.
The film also avoids patronising women by not portraying all men as morons, with Chris O'Dowd's State Patrol Officer Nathan being the most endearing of all the characters. The ability for the film to poke fun at both sexes is best displayed from the hilarious Matt Lucas/Rebel Wilson combo as Gil and Brynn, possibly the worst roommates in the history of film. The film is a hoot from start to finish, and shows that a movie lead by female actors can be fun for all.
Honourable mentions in this category go to Judd Apatow directed films Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin and the brilliant vulgarity of Bad Santa.
