21 Jump Street Sequel: 4 Dos and 4 Don'ts To Make It Work

4. Do: Bring Back Brie Larson

brie larson 21 jump street While the main focus of the first film was the relationship between Schmidt and Jenko, I'd argue that Brie Larson's performance as high school student Molly Tracey was as integral as Hill and Tatum's performances in making the film work. Larson's performance had a down to earth and natural charm that rivaled even that of Emma Stone. While Molly's storyline regarding her relationship to Schmidt was resolved at the end of the film, I think there's still room for Larson in the sequel, even if it's a smaller part. It'd be interesting to explore where her character is after the events of the first film, espeically since Molly felt a little more complicated then the typical female character in these types of films. If they do go down the college route for the sequel, she could show up at the same college at which Schmidt and Jenko are undercover. Having her back would also create a nice sense of continuity, showing the audience the first film hasn't been forgotten.

3. Do: Get A Compelling Villain

Hans Landa While Dave Franco's Eric Molson provided some interesting complexity regarding Schmidt's relationship to the assignment- and Rob Riggle definitely scored laughs as gym teach/drug supplier Mr. Walters, neither were rivaling the Joker for a place in the hall of iconic movie villains. For sequels, the tendicity is to up the ante in regards to the villain. Think, of course, of the Joker, Silva in Skyfall, and Benedict Cumberbatch's John "maybe he is, maybe he isn't Khan" Harrison in the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness. For this sequel, Schmidt and Jenko should face off against a powerful foe, someone who can be both hilarious and dangerous. Maybe Christoph Waltz, two time Academy Award winner, whose performance as Nazi Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds is one of the stand out villains of the last decade, could be a good fit for this franchise.
