And now for the most controversial moment of the night. Mad Max: Fury Road won the Costume Design award this year, and designer Jenny Beavan headed to the stage to collect her statue. She gave an impassioned speech thanking George Miller, while kitted out in a rather casual outfit of a scarf, black jeans and trousers, and unlike many of the other folks filling the room, didn't seem to have put much effort into styling her hair or anything. Cue Stephen Fry cracking a joke about her rather ordinary appearance by saying, "Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to an awards ceremony dressed as a bag lady", generating uproarious laughter in the room and a firestorm of controversy on Twitter. Many viewers found Fry's gag unpleasant and mean, causing Fry to tweet a picture of himself with Beaven after the ceremony, making it clear there were no hard feelings. Fry later "quit" Twitter amid the backlash, which considering how gut-bustingly funny the gag was, is just a damn shame. Props to Beaven for turning up however she wanted to, but comedians are always gonna be comedians.
