23 Worst Movie Endings Since 2000
4. WTF!? - Planet Of The Apes (2001)
Tim Burton's infamous Planet of the Apes remake stands among the most pointless films ever made, and in a misguided attempt to add some value to the whole sorry endeavour, Burton came up with a total mind-melter of an ending that makes absolutely no sense. Protagonist Leo (Mark Wahlberg) ends up traveling back in time through an electromagnetic storm, hoping to return to 2029 and continue his life as normal. However, when he lands at the Lincoln Memorial, he finds that instead of honouring Abraham Lincoln, it now honours simian General Thade, and everyone in the immediate vicinity, such as police officers and news reporters, are apes. W.T.F. Why It Sucks: It's easy enough to assume that Leo ended up in a parallel universe, but does that really make this ending acceptable? Burton clearly wanted to deviate from the awesome plot twist of the original movie, where it transpires that Charlton Heston was on Earth the entire time, but did he need to come up with something so bone-headed and goofy? It almost feels like it should have had a laugh track attached to convey the proper tone.
