23 Worst Movie Endings Since 2000

15. The Non-Twist - Saw V

Saw V is basically a bridging chapter of the hugely successful Saw franchise, explaining through heavy flashbacks how Detective Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) has been Jigsaw's accomplice, as is revealed in the twist at the end of Saw IV. The dramatic thrust of the movie has FBI Agent Peter Strahm (Scott Patterson) attempting to prove Hoffman's guilt, and in turn exonerate himself, who Hoffman has framed as Jigsaw's accomplice. At the end of the movie, Strahm tracks Hoffman to an underground cellar, which contains a glass box filled with broken glass. Strahm listens to part of Hoffman's tape, which insists that he enter the glass box, but having heard enough, he stops the tape and attacks Hoffman before throwing him inside the box. Strahm then listens to the remainder of the tape, which reveals that failing to enter the box will cause Hoffman's legacy as Jigsaw's accomplice to become his own. At that moment, the box containing Hoffman disappears into the floor as the walls close in on Strahm, who is brutally crushed to death as the movie ends. Why It Sucks: For starters, the advertising for Saw V insisted that "you won't believe how it ends", implying yet another mind-blowing plot twist, but this time, the twist was essentially that there wasn't one. What's more, Hoffman's trap was just too silly and contrived: are we supposed to believe that if Strahm just got in the box, Hoffman would've let himself be crushed by the walls, or what? Plus, the ending took one of the franchise's few likeable character left and killed him off, which left an even more unsavoury taste in the mouth.
