9. Minari (2020)

Ex Machina
A24

Lee Isaac Chung's semi-autobiographical drama about a Korean family who move to rural America and struggle to come to terms with their new lives, Minari is vivid in its depiction of 1980s America and the set-backs faced by immigrants.

Universal and still strikingly relevant, the drama is at once an arresting tale of marriage and family, and a sweet exploration of childhood. It's sensitive in its depictions of cultural identity and the hardships of starting over, and becomes more moving with every passing scene and heartbreaking character interaction.

Add to this emotional resonance the arresting performances of Steven Yeun, Yeri Han, Youn Yuh-jung and Alan Kim, and what you have with Minari is a future classic that represents the best of what A24 can achieve.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
