Predicted Critical Consensus: "A welcome return to form for Johnny Depp, Black Mass is a sharply-directed crime drama filled with fine performances." With a number of tense trailers playing-up Johnny Depp's transformative performance as iconic mobster White Bulger, it's hard not to expect big things from the Scott Cooper-directed (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furance) crime thriller. With a fascinating real-life story to draw from and the talented Jez Butterworth (Fair Game, Edge of Tomorrow) co-writing the script, it'd struggle to go wrong. It also boasts an absolutely stacked cast to boot (including Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard, Corey Stoll, Sienna Miller, Adam Scott and Juno Temple), and so it's tough to imagine so many big names signing on if the script wasn't up to scratch. Depp's effort may prove slightly divisive due to that creepier-than-creepy make-up, but expect Black Mass to score the actor's strongest reviews in years, and it might even translate to a Best Actor nomination to boot...
