23. The Martian (75%)
Predicted Critical Consensus: "If not quite living up to the brilliance of the source material, The Martian makes good use of its stellar cast and delivers another sci-fi hit for director Ridley Scott." Given that the iconic filmmaker has been on something of a critical downturn over the last decade, it's probably best to temper your expectations for his latest sci-fi, no matter how splendid it looks from the trailer released to date. Thankfully, without the baggage of the Alien mythos and boasting a strong novel to work from (as well as Drew "The Cabin in the Woods" Goddard adapting it), Scott's problem with wonky screenplays is a lot less likely to rear its head. With the right script, Scott can knock this out of the park, and from what's been seen so far, it looks the cast are going to throw themselves completely into it. Like last year's Interstellar, it won't score Gravity levels of acclaim, but it'll still end up as one of the year's best-reviewed sci-fi films, and prove that, at almost 80 years old, Scott's still got it.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
