25 Astonishingly Dumb 21st Century Film Oscar Wins
18. 2016: Spectre Wins Best Original Song
Beat: Earned It from Fifty Shades of Grey, Till it Happens to You from The Hunting Ground, Manta Ray from Racing Extinction and Simple Song #3 from Youth.
Should've Won: Simple Song #3.
The one win everyone was hoping wouldn't happen at the 2016 Oscars was Sam Smith's widely-maligned theme song for Spectre winning Best Original Song. Alas, that's just what happened.
Admittedly, Writing's on the Wall isn't quite as bad as you remember and it works OK in the film, but out of context it's pretty dreary and it was honestly the weakest of the five nominated songs.
Considering how widely hated this song was and considering that it was the worst of the line-up by several clear miles - all four of the other nominees were excellent, which is surprising considering how many underwhelming songs often get nominated for this award - this win was simply inexplicable.
Any of the other nominees would've been a better winner, although it's arguable that the gorgeous Simple Song #3 from Paolo Sorrentino's Youth was the best of the bunch and should've taken it.
