25 Astonishingly Dumb 21st Century Film Oscar Wins
17. 2021: Sound Of Metal Wins Best Editing
Beat: The Father, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago Seven.
Should've Won: The Trial of the Chicago Seven.
Sound of Metal is a brilliant film and it absolutely deserved the six nominations it received, as well as the gong for Best Sound, but its win for Best Editing was a bit strange.
It's a very well-edited film, but considering the competition it really didn't deserve to win this particular Oscar. It certainly didn't match the beautifully poetic editing of Nomadland, the ingeniously disorientating editing of The Father or the downright electrifying editing of Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago Seven.
Quite frankly, Trial should've won. There's a certain scene in that film which is one of the most brilliantly edited scenes in recent years.
The Best Editing field is usually a mess filled with nominees that didn't actually do anything striking with their editing, so it was pretty frustrating to see what was the only fourth-best of the nominees win in what was otherwise that rare thing: a great Best Editing line-up.
