6. Griffith - Berserk

There are few characters in anime who look as angelic as Berserk’s Griffith, and yet this softly spoken menace is just about as devilish as one gets in cartoon form.

Berserk is a series that relies so heavily on the strength of its characters to drive the story, of which Griffith stands out the most as a pillock of great magnitude.

Specifically, the 1997 Berserk series depicts the manga’s Golden Age arc, Griffith’s most base moment and the saga that will make you genuinely hate what is essentially colouring on a screen.

The once hallowed leader of the Band of the Falcon was hailed as a messiah for the role he played in ending the Hundred-Year War, but similar to Seymour in Final Fantasy X, he shuns his iconic status for something a little more sinister.

Via your classic sun eclipse ritual, all-white Griffith gladly sacrifices a bunch of his old comrades to obtain the power of a god (which he does), but not before an incredibly jarring scene in which he rapes former friend Casca in front of Guts, another of his old allies and her love.

There are so many things about Griffith, such as his look and voice, that might lead you to believe he’s a force for good—don’t be fooled.
