Year after year, they produce works of dazzling emotional heights, most recently with the deceivingly simple and utterly captivating picture Two Days, One Night, which featured Marion Cotillard in a stunning turn as a woman who must convince her co-workers to turn down a bonus so that she can keep her job. The Dardenne Brothers want to make films that show life as it really is, hardships and all, but there is a glimmer of hope in all of their features that allows them to transcend any labels. Dardenne movies can be depressing at times, but they're not depressing films. So Lorna's Son and The Child are brilliantly raw and so very Dardenne in their make-up, whilst The Kid With A Bike felt much lighter in tone and showcased a different side to their aesthetic. It's filmmakers like the Dardennes that we so desperately need, though; those who set out to chronicle the kinds of people that society as a whole often forgets.
