The Drugs: marijuana, alcohol Out of all the films on this list the Coen Brothers' comedy masterpiece, The Big Lebowski, isn't strictly about drugs - but the playful slacker ethos which permeates throughout has meant that it has gone down in cinema history as one of the greatest stoner movies of all time, not to mention the fact that spliffs and White Russians abound throughout. Jeff Bridges, in perhaps his most memorable role to date, stars as Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski, a laid back eternal hippie who is mistaken for a millionaire with the same name by a pair of hired goons and has his favourite rug urinated on. The Raymond Chandler-esque caper which follows is a hilarious exercise in stringing together MacGuffins, but it's the quirky characters and effortlessly snappy dialogue which gives the film its impetus. The stoner vibe certainly doesn't prevent the Coens from slipping in the occasional bizarre dream sequence, not to mention a few satirical swipes at American culture and foreign policy.
