9. Christiane F
The Drugs: Heroin, amphetamines, alcohol, LSD Finding a movie which is as relentlessly morbid as Requiem for a Dream might sound like a difficult task (and one you might ask yourself what the point is) but if anything comes close to its depths of depression, it's Ulrich Edel's Christiane F, adapted from the non-fiction of the book of the same name based on the recordings of a teenage heroin addict in Berlin. While many in the audience may have found themselves less than sympathetic to the plight of the doomed characters of Trainspotting and Requiem for a Dream (they're adults - they should know better), 13-year-old Christiane brings with her that youthful naivety and supposed innocence which makes her downfall all the more tragic. A night out at a David Bowie concert (who also provides the soundtrack to the movie), leads to a dalliance with heroin which doesn't take long to lead on to theft and prostitution. The fact that this is based on a real person's experiences only enhances the feeling of despair - Christiane F is one of the most shocking anti-drug movies ever made.
