25 Best Vampire Movies Ever Made
9. The Addiction
A monochromatic, moody, and thoughtful project from horror legend Abel Ferrara (The Driller Killer, Bad Lieutenant), The Addiction is one of those films that relishes on riding the line between arthouse and exploitation.
Released alongside Ferrara’s gangster film The Funeral, The Addiction follows philosophy student Kathleen (Lilly Taylor) who, after being attacked and bitten by a vampire, develops an unshakable addiction for human blood. Embarking on a self-destructive search to quench her thirst, she meets another vampire (Christopher Walken) who claims to have conquered their addiction and tries to help Kathleen do the same.
Described by Ferrara as an allegory for drug addiction (he went through a year-long addiction to heroin himself), The Addiction taps into themes of philosophy and Catholicism, drawing on William S. Burroughs’ The Naked Lunch. While it’s oddness may not be to everyone’s taste, this modern vampire film is pure cinema at its most raw.
