8. The Lost Boys
One of the first films from Joel Schumacher, The Lost Boys is the ultimate cult vampire film. It’s effortlessly cool, campy, and is still hailed as an anthem of the outcasts.
When brothers Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim) move to the fictional beach town of Santa Carla, the murder capital of the world, they soon discover that the town is home to a punk vampire gang led by David (Kiefer Sutherland). However, when the gang tries to initiate Michael into their group, turning him into a half-vampire in the process, it’s up to the brothers and their new friends to defeat the gang’s leader to break the curse.
Originally intended to be a much more family friendly outing, Schumacher – who described the original premise as “The Goonies go vampire” – subsequently reworked the project for older audiences. Throw in an excellent soundtrack and even better mullets and you have a vampire film that will always have a home with film fans.
