When you picture a vampire, the first image that's likely to pop into your head is Bela Lugosi’s iconic portrayal of Dracula from the 1931 Universal monster movie of the same name.

Directed and co-produced by Tod Browning (who’d go on to direct cult classic Freaks), Dracula, unlike Nosferatu, was an official adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel as we follow the macabre love triangle between John Harker (David Manners), Mina (Helen Chandler), and the titular count.

While the effects in the over-80 years since the film was released haven’t aged well, they nevertheless provide an added campy value that makes revisiting this cornerstone in horror cinema worth your time if you haven’t had the chance to see it.

Of course, the main reason for experiencing this Gothic romance is to see Lugosi in action. With a performance as hypnotic as his, it’s no surprise that his portrayal remains the archetypal image of this horror legend.
