25 Best Zombie Movies Ever Made

14. Diary Of The Dead

Somehow, 2007 seemed to be the year that the zombies would be observed through the lens of found footage with REC and Diary of the Dead hitting both in the same year. Both, of course, took very different approaches to this frantic style of filmmaking, but only one was in that classic Romero style.

The handheld nature of the found footage film just works when it comes to zombies, even the slow shambling dead come across as terrifying and they often surround the camera. Even the long tired trope of - zombie out of nowhere doesn’t get tired as they’ve now got an excuse to be just off frame.

With Diary George also went to great lengths to explain away why our survivors were holding a camera - this is can be a tightrope, but Romero pulled it off and even made this picture feel more mysterious. And in our current climb, it's all too believable, now that we all carry cameras on us at all times.

Sadly after Diary of the Dead, George A. Romero would never reach these heights again as Survival of the Dead was a commercial and critical failure. So at least when we remember the legendary director in his second run, we have Diary of the Dead.
