14. Steven Kills His Son - The Killing Of A Sacred Deer

Yorgis Lanthimos' pitch-black comedy is basically one long 121-minute WTF moment, revolving around a surgeon, Steven (Colin Farrell), who has a curse placed on his family by Martin (Barry Keoghan), a creepy teenager whose father died in a surgery that Steven oversaw.

Steven is warned by Martin that he needs to kill either his wife (Nicole Kidman), son or daughter in order to spare the rest of his family from the curse, something he rejects until the very end of the film, where he finally relents.

Steven then blindfolds and restrains his family in their living room, while he spins around on the spot with a rifle and randomly fires the gun, to ensure that whoever dies is random. After two shots miss, the third attempt kills his young son, Bob.

The film ends about two minutes later with not a scrap of catharsis, just the grim reality of a man having murdered his own son.
