25 Films That Intentionally Spoil Other Films
11. Clerks II (2006)
By the time Clerks II rolled around, Kevin Smith had a good many films under his belt and a reputation for the interconnected stoner comedies that had come to be known as the View Askewniverse (named after Smith’s production company). The sequel to his 1994 debut was filmed over a decade later, in colour, and with a budget that allowed for stars like Rosario Dawson to join alongside the original returning Quick Stop gang.
Clerks II has Dante Hicks and Randal Graves working for a Mooby’s fast food joint, after accidentally burning down their long-term place of employment. Among the new cast of characters at Mooby’s are Christian teenager and Lord of the Rings fan Elias Grover (Trevor Fehrman) and their manager Becky Scott (Dawson).
Now, as mentioned, Smith likes to pepper his films with pop culture references, comic book lore, and name-drops and spoilers from the trilogy far, far away. But, in the years since Chasing Amy, there were now two Star Wars trilogies and a Lord of the Rings one competing for the title of the film trilogy.
This leads to an in-restaurant argument between Randall, Elias, and a Rings-obsessed customer over which trilogy is better. Randall describes LOTR as "Three movies of people walking to a fu**ing volcano," mimes throwing the ring in at the end, and references its "25 endings." It ain’t exactly high drama, but it does spoil the films, and makes a man lose his lunch to boot.
