25 Greatest Easter Eggs From The Last 20 Years Of Horror

23. Scream - Halloween H20 - Scream 2

The best reboot of a horror franchise has to be Halloween H20: there€™s been few attempts at kickstarting the dying corpses of Jason and Freddy that€™ve achieved quite as many sufficient scares, smarts and eye candy. The re-do of Michael Myers€™ series was a cracking update of the slasher mythos.

It was a little late to the party though, with Scream (1996) and its sequel Scream 2 (1997) having already beat it to the horror revival hootenanny, which is where the crafty winks come in. Scream, THE self-referential slasher of our time, made no bones that it owed a lot to the original Halloween (1978): from the mention of Jamie Lee Curtis€™ status as a scream queen, to flat-out discussing the rules of the horror genre while Michael Myers€™ knife shudders on pause on the TV screen. Film nerd Randy chooses to stay alone in the house while a killer is on the loose so he can watch the end of Halloween and shout at Curtis.

If you weren€™t sure: writer Kevin Williamson loves Halloween.

A few years later, the franchise paid it back, offering a thumbs up to the newest slasher kid on the block. During a tiny scene, the school girls of H20 gather in the TV room to watch a movie. The film Scream 2.
