The Ending: After undercover cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) has been killed and undercover mobster Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) has seemingly gotten away with his scheming, suspended Sgt. Dignam (Mark Wahlberg) lies in wait at Sullivan's apartment. Sullivan gets in the front door and is shot dead by Dignam, who was smart enough to wear paper booties to cover his tracks. Then a rat calls across the window frame, because symbolism. Why It's Awesome: Though Martin Scorsese's Best Picture-winning crime classic veers away from its Hong Kong source material at the climax, the far happier ending here (Damon's equivalent in the original gets away with it) is still extremely satisfying to watch, and feels earned given how the majority of the film is somewhat superior to the original movie anyway. The rat gets called out a lot as too heavy-handed, but it's just meant to be a silly gag: it's not meant to be deep or taken seriously just because it's Scorsese.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
