The Ending: The male passengers of the flight manage to break into the cockpit just as the terrorist pilot, Ziad Jarrah, shifts the plane upside down, sending it into an uncontrollable spin as it heads downwards to rural Pennsylvania. As the plane contacts with the ground, the screen cuts to black. Why It's Awesome: Because it tackles an incredibly prickly, sensitive subject with enormous grace and simply tries to tell the truth as best possible. There's heroism from the passengers, but United 93 doesn't end with an "America, f*** yeah!" climax in which the bad terrorists get taken to task: nobody gets out alive, and it's simply a horrific waste of life any way you cut it. That Greengrass lingers on the plummeting shot is especially powerful and one of the most unforgettable shots of the last decade in filmmaking.
