20. 12 Years A Slave (2013)

The Ending: Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is finally freed from slavery and returned to his family. He enters the door where his wife and two children are waiting, along with his daughter's husband and their own son, who they named after Solomon. Title cards then reveal that Northup unsuccessfully sued the three men who sold him into slavery, but also helped others attain their freedom, though the circumstances of his death and burial remain rather mysterious. Why It's Awesome: There's nothing big or flashy about this one, but it's rooted in a tremendous amount of humanity and catharsis, and after Solomon's journey, that's all that's needed. Plus, it cements Ejiofor's performance as an absolute clinic.
