25 Greatest Movie Endings Since 2000

19. Gone Baby Gone (2007)

The Ending: After missing child Amanda is returned to her mother Helene (Amy Ryan), private investigator Kenzie (Casey Affleck) visits them some time later, and Helene is getting ready to go out on a date. She doesn't have a sitter for Amanda but hopes that her friend will watch her (she hasn't asked yet), at which point Kenzie, who aided in Amanda's return at great personal cost (his girlfriend broke up with him), agrees to watch her instead. Then Kenzie asks Amanda about her doll Mirabelle, but Amanda corrects him: the doll is called Annabelle. They then sit on the sofa watching TV as the movie comes to an end. Why It's Awesome: Because the ending continues to ask one very provocative question: did Kenzie really do the right thing? He returned Amanda to her mother, but when the mother is so reckless (not even remembering the name of Amanda's doll), does she "deserve" to keep her kid, when Amanda was previously in good company with her kidnapper, Captain Doyle (Morgan Freeman)? The ironic twist, of course, is that Kenzie now has to live with his decision and essentially look over Amanda as a guardian angel, because Helene simply cannot be trusted to be a good parent.
