The Ending: After finally being rescued, Phillips (Tom Hanks) is seen by a doctor, who asks him various questions about his injuries and the blood on him while giving him a once over. A deeply in-shock Phillips is overwhelmed and tries his best to answer, and is eventually laid down by the doctor, who assures him that his family knows he is safe, and everything will be fine. A final title card states that pirate Muse (Barkhad Abdi) was sentenced to 33 years in prison for piracy, and Phillips returned to the sea the very next year. Why It's Awesome: Because it's easily one of Hanks' greatest moments as an actor, and absolutely should have resulted in him earning an Oscar nod, especially considering that a relatively unremarkable Christian Bale was nominated for American Hustle the very same year. It's tough to think of a better, more convincing cinematic portrayal of the effects of shock. Even though Henry Jackman's closing theme "Safe Now" sounds like a total rip-off of Hans Zimmer's Inception theme "Time", it does little to diminish an incredibly moving and cathartic moment.
