#18 - $1.027 billion The first new Star Wars film in 16 years was met with an appropriate level of fanfare and excitement. The fact that it was a crushing disappointment has seen it hailed as a movie that ruined the childhoods of many Star Wars fans in the years which have followed, but it's still the only instalment of the franchise to (eventually) make more than a billion dollars. That will no doubt change when Star Wars: The Force Awakens is released of course! Is The Phantom Menace really as bad as everyone says? There are certainly a fair few Star Wars fans who love the movie, but it sticks out as being by far the worst of the six that have so far been released. In the course of making this prequel, George Lucas lost what made Star Wars so special in the first place. Regardless of how The Phantom Menace was treated by critics, it was still a massive financial success, breaking a long list of box office records and becoming the biggest release of 1999 in the process. With a haul just shy of $1 billion, it was the third highest grossing movie of all-time for a fair few years, and a 3D re-release in 2012 helped it make even more.
