When the British company, Rare, began making a video game adaptation of GoldenEye eight of nine staff had never worked on a game before.

However, the developers wanted to take their time to make the game perfect, so they released GoldenEye 007 TWO YEARS after the movie’s release. Nintendo were so unhappy with this delay that they stopped funding the game for three months. When Nintendo developers tested GoldenEye 007, they found the levels so glitchy, they strongly considered cancelling the entire game.

Refusing to give up, Rare worked up to 120 hours per week and managed to compete the game six weeks ahead of schedule. With time to spare, one developer decided to cobble together a multiplayer.

You read that right. The multiplayer was an afterthought, was created by one guy, and yet, it is one of the greatest multiplayers in video game history.

Nintendo didn’t even know there was a multiplayer until the game was finished.

Despite the negativity, GoldenEye 007 was hailed as one of the most influential shooting games ever. The reason why the game turned out so well despite the developers’ inexperience is because they didn’t know the traditional way to make a game, so they created their own unique system.

Players liked this because it was unlike any other shooter at the time.
