A more modern Rocky story, Southpaw - which was originally planned to be an Eminem vehicle - sees a transformed  Jake Gyllenhaal playing a newly retired boxer whose world falls apart when his wife (Rachel McAdams) is killed accidentally during an altercation with another boxer.

He loses his daughter, and turns back to boxing - with the help of Forest Whitaker's trainer - to get his life, and his daughter back. 

Selling Point

Gyllenhaal does exposed nerve emotion and darkness better than he does anything, The same can pretty much be said of Antoine Fuqua who is always at his best when he's hip deep in grit.

Reservations

If any, it's that it has both 50 Cent and Rita Ora in - more musicians with unfortunate previous who want a slice of the acting pie.
