7. The Babadook

Director Jennifer Kent's claustrophobic use of shadow and light in The Babadook created a number of memorable images which have contributed to the films success, but one stands tall above the rest.

In this particular shot, Kent doesn't employ cheap shock tactics, instead subtly placing the ominous figure of the Babadook in the background of the shot. What the viewer discovers for themselves is far more terrifying than a thousand jump scares.
