25 Shocking CGI Movie Moments That Left You Speechless
3. Davy Jones' First Appearance - Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
From the first entry in the franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean leaned heavily into the supernatural and mythical, and had the special effects to back it up. The Curse of the Black Pearl was a huge hit, and it's fair to say that had the effects of said curse on the crew of the titular ship not looked convincing, it likely wouldn't have been.
The sequel stepped things up even further, in terms of nautical myths, the class of antagonist, and the CGI to bring it all together. In short, Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) was not only an outstanding villain, but he looked unfathomably good.
What the visual effects team managed to achieve with Davy Jones was something that still holds up almost 20 years later. The villain had the face of a human/octopus hybrid, and yet still managed to look like Bill Nighy, able to portray all the emotions that the legendary actor could bring to the role.
The very first scene in which Jones appeared showed off these effects masterfully. The character inspected the prospective new members of the Flying Dutchman's crew, with every tentacle moving separately, his face looking just the right amount of disgustingly slimy, and he was genuinely unsettling.
