25 Shocking CGI Movie Moments That Left You Speechless
4. Rook - Alien: Romulus
Just because a film may be flush with outstanding visual effects - so much so, to the point that it was nominated for an Academy Award in that very category - doesn't mean that there isn't some CGI on the complete other end of the spectrum hidden away in there somewhere.
This was the case with Alien: Romulus, the 2024 entry into the franchise that was arguably the best since 1986, although the black sheep among the fantastic aesthetics wasn't exactly hidden away. It became one of the biggest talking points of the entire thing.
On board the Romulus was an android named Rook, who took exactly the same form as Ash from the original Alien way back in 1979. This meant that Alien: Romulus posthumously featured Ian Holm four years after his death, with special effects that were severely lacking. Unfortunately, it seemed as though the intent to get Holm's likeness into the picture outweighed whether it could be done properly.
Director Fede Alvarez explained after the theatrical release that the effects on Rook were rushed and naturally looked unfinished because they were unfinished. However, as with Axl's head in Thor: Love and Thunder, even after going through post-cinema upgrades for home release, there wasn't exactly a marked improvement made.
