25 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Indiana Jones

24. Elephants Almost Ruined The Temple Of Doom

Thanks to riding elephants during the production of the prequel, Harrison Ford was hospitalised after suffering a severe spinal disc herniation, and unthinkably tried to work through his pain, as George Lucas confirmed: "He could barely stand up, yet he was there every day so shooting would not stop. He was in incomprehensible pain, but he was still trying to make it happen."

23. Lucas Basically Tricked Spielberg Into Directing A Trilogy

When The Last Crusade was released, Steven Spielberg admitted that part of his reason for continuing the franchise was that e was contractually obligated, though he subsequently learned he was basically attached to nothing: "George said if I directed the first one then I would have to direct a trilogy. He had three stories in mind. It turned out George did not have three stories in mind and we had to make up subsequent stories."

22. The Submarine Controversy

Before some removed footage (as famously celebrated in an episode of The Big Bang Theory) solved the supposed plot-hole, fans complained that there was no way Indy could have successfully hidden on the Nazi sub all the way to their secret island. Ultimately, it was revealed that the deleted scene saw him lashing himself to the sub's periscope with his whip. More interesting is the fact that the submarine model used in Raiders Of The Lost Ark was also used in Das Boot.
